I just got back from the Toronto Film Festival where I groomed Hugh Jackman for the Warner Bros. movie, “Prisoners,” and Liam Neeson for his newest film, “Third Person.” The trip was fantastic. First of all, they’re both cool dudes and easy to make look good. Secondly, I discovered how much I love Toronto.
I stayed at the Shangri-La Hotel, which really is paradise and, with its location in the center of the city, can’t be beat. One of my first nights there I stumbled into the hotel lounge and discovered a singer who performed a lot of Marvin Gaye tunes, which I love. Terrence Howard also happened to be in the crowd and he got up and sang The Temptations’ hit “My Girl.” The man’s got some pipes! It was so cool.
Something that really blew me away about Toronto was the underground shopping complex, PATH. It’s actually in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest underground shopping complex in the world. You can walk, shop, eat and then jump on the subway, but it’s not like any subway I’ve ever seen before. It’s actually beautiful and functional!
Of course, movies rule at the festival and I was lucky enough to see some amazing ones, starting with “Prisoners.” Both Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal gave riveting performances that stay with you long after you leave the theater. “Gravity,” with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, blew me away. It was a visual masterpiece. I even walked the red carpet on Sunday with my client Nigel Sinclair, the producer of “Rush.” He was kind enough to weasel me in as his pseudo hair and make-up guy. I’ve been dying to see that film, which is set in the NASCAR world, but the screening was full so I was lucky to get in. Niki Lauda, the NASCAR driver who the movie is about, made a surprise appearance after the film to answer questions. What a powerful moment it was to hear him talk about his experience and the film itself.
Last, but not least, I saw Liam Neeson’s film, “Third Person.” It features an amazing A-List cast that includes some of the most beautiful women in the world – Mila Kunis, Olivia Wilde, Michelle Pfeiffer…need I say more? The script is full of twists and turns and both Liam and Adrien Brody knocked it out of the park. Loved it.
All-in-all a great week in a beautiful city with some of my favorite clients and fantastic films. I’m one lucky dude!
