For guys with curly hair, the road to embracing your hair can be difficult and often a curly hair guru is the missing part of the puzzle to help you manage and style you mane to its fullest potential. Celebrity hairstylist Jason Schneidman has styled the likes of Hugh Jackman and Jeff Probst but is also responsible for Bruno Mars’ transformation from polished pomadour to curly coiff. Today, I bring you a quick question and response from the man’s groomer himself, Jason Schneidman.
MM: You’ve had an accomplished career thus far, is there one memory that you’re particularly proud of?
JS: It’s so hard to pick just one, but I have to say I’m really proud of turning Bruno Mars from a pompadour into a natural. I’m known for my men’s cuts and, not too many people know this story, but after Bruno moved from NYC to LA, I was recommended to his manager by another salon. When I first met Bruno, he almost didn’t trust me to cut his hair but after we got to know each other a little better, and I showed him the looks I had done and what I was able to do, he took my recommendation seriously…and now I’m the only one he trusts to cut the puff!
MM: And as a fellow curly haired guy, what did you find were some of your personal challenges with your own hair over the years?
JS: With curly hair, everything is always so unpredictable and inconsistent! I never know whether I’m going to have a good or bad hair day and there are so many factors that can affect it further; like humidity, dryness, etc.
MM: Absolutely. You’ve styled a variety of hair textures, including singer Bruno Mars like you mentioned. What do you think is the most challenging part of taking care of curly or tightly coiled hair?
JS: With Bruno (and a lot of curly haired guys), the biggest challenge is to not lose the curl. The secret is to not touch your hair during the drying process. I only ever begin to style Bruno’s hair once it is dry, but if he begins to play with it while it’s still drying, it gets frizzy, loses the curl and we have to re-wet it and shake it out again.
MM: And what sort of products should guys be looking to use in their hair care regimen?
JS: I’m a big fan of conditioner, which a lot of guys forget to use. Conditioner provides a number of benefits including moisturization, detangling, and reduced breakage. It also makes hair more manageable and healthy-looking. If you don’t have time to use a separate conditioner, I recommend the Dove Men+Care 2-in-1 Shampoo+Conditioners, which are also great for guys who have short to medium-length hair, since too much conditioning will just weigh hair down.
MM: Would you say you have any specific ingredients that are “must haves” or “no-nos” for tightly coiled or afro textured hair?
JS: For tightly coiled/afro textured hair, you should use cream or oil styling products – especially sheens or pomades – to moisturize your hair. I also recommend using conditioner on hair; from the shaft to the end and only lightly rinsing it out to maintain a bit of built in control – I do this all the time for my curly hair! Products to avoid are definitely hair spray and anything with alcohol in it since it will dry out your hair, making it frizzy and brittle.
MM: And finally any general tips you think guys should know in order to keep our hair looking its best?
JS: A man’s daily activities can take a toll on their hair, so they need to take care of their hair by starting with the right products for their hair types. Dove Men+Care has a great hair range specifically designed for men’s needs and also addresses guys’ most common concerns like dandruff, itchy, sensitive scalp, and thinning and/or oily hair. One watch out for the summer is that a lot of men don’t realize their scalp is getting exposed to the sun, making it sensitive. To keep your hair looking its best, try using Dove Men+Care Sensitive Scalp 2-in-1 because it gently cleanses the scalp while conditioning the hair. It’s even proven to make hair 3X stronger to withstand any damage you get from the sun.
